So I got in an intense argument with the people in my calculus class today about the point of marriage and associated rituals
#
And they all gave me pitying looks because I'm single and I told them to go fuck themselves
#
But anyway
#
although I'm not going to degrade the ceremony of marriage for people who want it
#
is it so controversial to say that marriage should be about wanting to make a commitment to someone
#
rather than about dressing up or having an expensive party or societal pressure or doing it because you think that you have nowhere else ...
#
to progress with the relationship?
#
After all
#
isn't the romantic part not in flowers or dresses or food or company
#
but in the idea of agreeing to love someone and stick by them?
#
Not that marriage doesn't have great legal and financial benefits
#
and of course I'm extremely for marriage equality
#
All I'm saying is that I don't know why I can't say that I don't personally want the associated rituals
#
without being branded cynical or a killjoy
#
Argh
